Former Crewmen

This is a list of men and women who have served on the Adams. It is totally voluntary (I'll bet you never saw that in the Navy), your name won't appear here unless you put it here. Do keep in mind, however, that spammers can see your email address here, too. NEW - If you would like to try out the new DDG-2 Forum, use this link.

To get your name/information onto the list, or to update your current information, just fill out the form at the bottom of this page.

A few rules/suggestions:

  • As I was setting up the list on this new site, I noticed that over 100 of the email addresses that were listed are no longer valid. If you see something like this _ in the email address section, that means the address given would not work and the person in question needs to send me a new email address.

  • The list is limited to those who have actually served on the USS Charles F. Adams DDG2.

  • I'm going to be very cautious about serving as a middle man for people who want to contact other people on the list. To be short and blunt, if their E-mail address is listed, use it. If it isn't listed, assume that they don't want to be contacted.

  • I have made it a rule to present the information submitted exactly as it is submitted except in those situations where obvious typo's are apparent, in which case I make the necessary corrections. There have been a few times, however, where the submission contained language which is not appropriate for a "family" page such as this.
I reserve the right to either remove such language or "soften" it to something more acceptable.

  • Please do not submit your comments in all capital letters, LIKE THIS!. In the world of Internet etiquette, using all caps is considered shouting and is very bad manners. But the real issue is that I have to retype such entries and I may inadvertently make errors.

That about covers everything, I think. I'll add more rules if needed.

If you would like to look for a fellow crew member, you can do so by doing a search based on the year(s) you served on the Adams. Go to the "Edit" function of your browser (it's on the menu bar) and then go to the "Find in Page" function. Different browsers may give that function a different name, but it should be something similar to that. Just enter the year and let the browser do the rest. Please note that you should use the full year format (1970) rather then any shortened variations. Be sure to check for each year you served. I have modified each entry below so that the years will match the "full" format.

Comments: I was assigned to the Adams coming off two tours in Vietnam with the Seabees (MCB-121). I only spent a litle less than a year. Shortly after arriving aboard the ship went to Charleston, SC for upgrading, etc. for about six months. The short time I was aboard was a great experience for me. The best bunch of shipmates I ever had the pleasure being stationed with. I retired in Feb of 1979 as a YNC. Any former shipmate that may recall me, please feel free to e-mail me.

Comments: Enjoyed going to all those great places on board the Adams. I have some fond memories of being a member of the Adams family they mostly have to do with the NATO cruise and visiting all those great places. Unfortunately the last place I was able to visit before getting out was GITMO. Arriving in Mayport after spending the last few weeks in Cuba was a good day for me because I got out of the NAVY to pursue a career in Law Enforcement. I served 17 years as a Trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol and I am currently working as a Federal Court Security Officer for The U.S. Marshal Service. If anyone would like to e-mail me, I would like to hear from you.

Mideast deployment, pulling out of Djibouti at 0200, Egyptian DD's Yom Kipper war. Phoenix beer (the best) Shellback card, (sore backside and knees) Camel riding. I still keep in touch with a follow snipe from Mississippi (Smitty) he's doing well. To all my fellow shipmates those times were the best. I hope to hear from you.

Comments: I spent the first several months of my four years on temp. duty aboard the USS CASCADE AD16 waiting for an opening in a school. I was assigned in charge of the metal hole as a Storekeeper. Than there was an offer to those interested to sign up for this new construction, CF ADAMS, and said it would mean much traveling. That sounded good to me, and travel we did! I was assigned to the Radar Gang, and made RD2 in less than 3 yrs.(Never did get a school) Plenty of on the job training. Original home port was Newport, later Charleston S.C. Many trips down to the missle range in the Caribbean. Goodwill cruise to the Nato countries, and then into the Med. for ops. Most memorable time was our participation in the Cuban blockade. Hard to believe it's over 50 yrs. ago. I'm happy the ship will have a deserving place for all to visit.

Comments: I, like some of the others, remember problems with our missles. We had them go in the water and come back at the ship, we had one go between the stacks. One time when we were loading them on board, one fell off the rail and put the whole base on alert. If I remember right, they usually hit what they fired at. While on board Adams, I served with some of the best engineers of my career. We had some great times to look back on. After leaving the Adams, I went on to serve on two other ships and two tours of shore duty before retiring in 1980 as MMCM. Looking forward to hearing from some of the crew.

Comments: Late May 1968, sea bag packed, last night on ship. Was headed to home for the last time. Woke up around 06:30 with ship rocking we were at sea hunting the Scorpion. My last week on the Charlie Deuce was spent as a civie. No watches, nothing to do but enjoy the worst storm off Hatteras i had ever seen. I slipped up to the bridge during the storm only to have the Captain run me off. Either he did not know i was a civilian or did not care.

Comments: I still look at the Adams with pride. We learned to recognize many things by their profiles, and the Adams had the profile of a true fighting ship, unlike many of the more modern ship.

I'd like to say thanks to all the ship's crew. The Charles F. Adams was a great place to grow up. I'll have to agree that we don't always realize the true value of our friendships until we loose track of the friend. I hope to hear from many of my old friends.

What happened to Captain Branco?

I remember great friends like Dean Baker, and Mark "wheels" Fearing. I recall hearing "On the road again,...and again,...." during the Indian ocean cruise. And free beer from the US Navy. Comments: My first ship. What an experience for a young 18 y.o. I really wasn't expecting to get dropped out of a helo onto the fantail in the Persian gulf for my arrival! I felt like a VIP, yeah right, then STG2 Kaarstad led me to my rack in the middle of the AS division lounge that I had to trice up when not sleeping on it. I must say it was a life learning experience living and working with all my crew members back then.

Comments: Proudly served on the Deuce with the crew in Gunplot below the messdecks where we kept the 5" guns on target (always). Revisited the ship at Mayport, FL with the family in 1982 as she was just returning to port. I remember the 1969 Med cruise, 6 months in the Charleston Ship Yard, GITMO Cuba shakedown cruise, Bermuda, the 1972 NATO cruise and dozens of ports along the way. I was on duty as the forward lookout and was the first to spot the Greek freighter that collided with our nest of ships/subs at Naples, Italy. I am probably the only crewmember that actually sounded the collision alarm before a real collision. Oh, the places we've been and the sights we've seen .. Yeah, those were great years.

Comments: I'm very grateful for this site. To find a site that has so many shipmates listed is great. My 1st contact was Scott Lewis 4-1-06. It was great to share old times. We covered such a small portion of our lives. Seeing how we are in the sams area we will have some catching up to do. Some of the other shipmates need to update your e-mail address. Tried to get in touch with some of you. But your e-mail isn't working.I started out as deck ape and became signalmen after about 9 months. We had some of the best Liberty, while alot of you guys were still working We were out hitting the beach. I to remember the hurricane. I spent some time behind the helm going through it. The course was 094. I will never forget that. With the waves smashing down on us I wondered if we where going to make it. We did, and if everyone remembers the deuce came out of it the best. When we got to Rota our ship suffered the less damage. We were by far the best destroyer in the Med. When I was on the Adams We recieved 3 battle E. Some really great gunners. If I had to go to war the Adams is the ship I would have wanted to be on. The whole crew was the best. Some of us had our difference, but when it came down to it WE WHERE THE BEST TEAM a ship could ever have. For all you snipes, you guys really have stayed in touch. My hats off to you all. Without your hard work down in them hell holes at temps out of this world, and to still do your jobs. Well done to you all. Great to see the signal gang on here to. I'll be in touch. Anyone is welcomed to write. My address is current, and my main e-mail tnb1661@yahoo.com. I want to say hello to everyone. Hope to hear from some of you guys. God Bless us all. Timothy Benway.

Comments: I would look forward to hearing from anyone I served with while aboard the Adams.  I have remained in contact with one other shipmate over the years, David Merriman, PMSN who lives in Il.  Anyone wishing to contact him can do so by e-mailing me and I will provide his address and phone number.  Mark Densmore QM3 also lives about an hour from me in Mystic Ct.  Although I was his best man at his wedding some years ago, I have not been in contact with him in any years.  For the Museum, I would like to place on loan my copy of the Charles F. Adams cruise book from the Mideast cruise we went on in or around the Fall of 1974.  I would also like to place on loan to the Museum a patch from DESRON (Destroyer Squadron) 8 which is no longer in existance that the Adams was a part of.  They later became a part of DESRON 14 when DESRON 8 was desolved. I look forward to hearing from any of you soon.  I do have vivid memories of the Adams when aboad her and remember the names of many of those I served with.

After I got out in Dec. '71 in went back to college in Oklahoma where I got my BA. I then discovered Eastern philosophy and Yoga and then toured the world and lived in India for some time. I am a published author, have a website: desertmystics.org, married with three children living in southern California. I remember "Buff", he was leaving as I was coming on-board, also David Tenney, Nicki McClintok, etc., it would be great to hear from some of the guys who served up in CIC back then. What a wild and crazy time it was. Take care y'all.

Comments: Glad to see the Adams is still floating. Thanks to all of you who are working so hard to turn the Adams into a museum. Had a great time on the Chuckie Deuce back in the 80's. Made the Indian Ocean cruise in 81 and learned what Gonzo Station was. Had a blast in Bunberry Australia with the rest of my BT and MM friends. Also made a North Atlantic NATO cruise and a Caribbean cruise. Hope to see some of my old friends at the next reunion.

Comments: Reported aboard the Adams in May of 1970 directly out of "A" school as an E-2, ETRSA.....didn't even know what the "R" stood for. I spent about 3 months aboard, went for 1 short cruise of about 2 weeks, then I got transferred over to the "Silly Willie" DE-1059, also out of Mayport. I assume that the EMO had me transferred because he knew that I was trying to get brother duty on board the USS AULT DD698. Well, that never happened because the AULT got xferred to the reserve fleet and they didn't have a billet for an ETRSA..... So instead of three years at sea with the "Charlie Duce", I only got 3 months... Still it was nice to have served.... What a shock it was to go from such a decked out warship to one of those puny-looking DE's with only 1 gun!!!! It turned out ok, but that's a story for another day.

Comments: Well, it's been a while but here's some people I'm still in touch with and then I'll list some we're wondering where they are? And maybe this will encourage them to email!

Thanks to this website I've got in touch with "Moon" Mullins (now a school assistant principle), got Ferge (Jack Ferguson) to get on here (Jack of all trades..master of?), still in touch with Bruce Loving (master welder/engineer) and Lee Retherford (building contractor) from the GM side of the house. Going to email Mat Tonges.

Does anybody know where the following people are, maybe we can have a reunion??????? or at least email.

GM's first: Dusty (Dusty) Roberts, "Rod" Rodriguez (one of the best people i ever met in the Navy) Chief "Bo" Bovasto, Dan "Grape Ape" Mcqinn (Huntsille?), Ron Dohr, Gary "Willie" Williams (reenlisted, I saw him in Charleston I think around 1982?) Hey Willie remember the boxing match? Well I got some pictures to post to jog your memory!, Little Roberts, Tanker (did you retire as a Master Chief?), GMMC Lingold (best master chief I ever knew, was on board as Weapons Dept in 79), lots of others.... Chief Huess, Fred, BB, Mike Breen, Lucas (remember Jaques Cousteau?), Dawson (FT type), Ben from Florida, my good friend Steve Walsh (lost touch hope all is ok) in St. Pete, Tasso (Lee is looking for you), Murray from Largo??? (lost touch)

I know there are alot more I just can't remember right now.... sorry about that.

Lots more space so I'll ramble on.... do you remember........

* The mooring line breaking at the back of the ship when somebody said: "Give er another turn, she'll be alright!" (sounded like a shotgun going off and Willie picked nylon splinters out of his leg for months)

* The hydraulic rain forrest?

* All the stantions breaking off the back of the boat by our mooring line?

* The faulty After Steering alarm that went off as we were pulling in from a cruise?

* Mahoney? (suddenly disappeared in thin air??????? I wonder why?)

* Mike Corder? (probably owner of a multimillion dollar electronic surveylance business now)

* Painting over those rust lines and salt spray before comming into port?

* The big storms of 80/81 and Fred's wwwwwwwwwwave!!!!

* Security briefings to stay out of the gut and heading right for it?

* Getting to be the bouncer of a famous bar in Puerto Rico after beating all the locals on thier own tables?

* Scoring hits on the Talos birds several times!(frigate said it couldn't be done!) that's why we got (2) battle E's!!!!!!!!! during that time....

* Security alerts?

* Mail buoy watch?

* All those good dive trips in Puerto Rico and the 13 lb. snapper I shot off the officers beach. The cook took it and made "gilli gilli".

* After steering take control!!!!!!

* Fantail cookout in the middle of the Russian ships?

* Boxing on the nonskid in front of the missle launcher? (I finally got to kick Willie's but!)

* The Harry Chapin concert?

* Hang fire in the gunmount.....

* Going through the baddest storms right through the middle on both deployments! We had great trip planners!, were they the Quartemasters?

* The beautiful French beaches? Marseille and Toulon?

* Ouzo? Never drank it and probably can't spell it either!

There are a few things to remember.... lots of good times had by all........ only a few bad, most self inflicted. I've got some good pictures to post as soon as I figure out how to do it.

I am now 45, retired, married, own a hobby shop business, independently wealthy (for what I need in life) drag race on occasion, and have a passion for 1967 Pontiac GTO's. We may try to do a reunion of some sort in Tennessee around beginning of June 2002 so if you want to drop in, drop a line. Anyway, email and share some sea stories...

Comments: From the Fleet Training Center in Newport till the time I left the ship it was quite an experience. One the I still reflect back on till this day.I know crazy things happen on all ships, but with the zany crew we had outrageous activities were part of the daily routine. I remember Frank White asking the supply officer if we could have a bicycle so we wouldn't have to walk to far. We struck a deal with a yard bird and when we tried to bring the bike on board the O.D. said no, because it was bright yellow. We got some gry paint and a decal of the ships patch for the front fender. The first time the captain saw the bike was during an inspection of one of our storerooms and all he said was "I like the decal it adds class to it" Some of the other antics were when the rest of the crew was eatin something like meat flovored noodles, a select group of us would be cooking stakes on hot plates in the after steering room. I rember lending out the use of the store rooms for weekend card games some of which did last all weekend. I hope to get to an ADAMS reunion some day just to talk to a few who served after me, I left behind a couple of bottles of crown royal under the deck plates in one of the store rooms, but could not get to them when it was time to leave the ship. Hope you enjoyed them who ever you are.

I have fond memories of the ship and crew, who got me my first sea legs and gave a wet-behind-the-ears Ensign the confidence to take charge and succeed. Comments: ...so we're going through all the spaces getting ready to pull into GTMO the next day. STG1 Jones hands me a can of paint thinner mixed with powder blue paint and asks me to get rid of it. Trying to accomplish everything at once, I open the midships door on the port side and dumped the can over the side. Needless to say, at 16 knots, not a drop of paint hit the water. But it did cover the entire port side of the ship. Ah, youth.

Comments: I never thought I'd miss my time on the ol' Deuce, but I do. While I was aboard her we went through Dry-dock in Philly('75), Gitmo training in Cuba, numerous trips to the Carribean, and a Med Cruise. In particular, I remember going to Romania; one of only a few US warships to visit the Black Sea during the "Cold War".

I recently discovered that our XO, P. T. Deutermann, is now an extremely successful Author. Ron Harrison and Glen Davis live in the Philadelphia area. Rick Rucker (our corpsman), I'm sad to say, recently passed away. I've lost touch with just about everyone else I knew from that time. The Mideast Cruise of 1973 was stark, but interesting. The North Atlantic cruise of late 1974 was cold (I was 1st Lt at the time). Philadelpia shipyard in 1975 provided a lot of time ashore. Gitmo in the Spring of 1976 was a real challange (I was DCA then).

Comments: Browsing through the roster I recognized several old shipmates. I saw a complete turnover of shipmates during my service on the "Sucky Chucky" as referred to at that time. Time has a way of mellowing old memories so I respectfully refer to it as the "Charlie Duece". I now look back on those memories as some of the best in my life. I look forward to visiting the Adams when it settles in Jacksonville.

Comments: The DOG-2 was the best DDG on the waterfront, and I can vouch for that cause I was on ONE more before I retired. Best bunch of Snipes ever to go "IN THE HOLE". THANKS to all the A.E.R. HEROES, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, AND I MISS EACH ONE OF YOU. Mr. D, how come you remember 33 1/3 ? Our E.O.T. said 34, Guess Main was dragging us again. CFA was the true highlight for my navy days, glad its over, wouldn't do it again, BUT LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

Comments: Today is 09/14/01 and my wife and went out to our front steps with lighted candles at 7:00 PM this evening to show support for America. We where joined by several neighbors and one of them had USS Charles F. Adams DDG2 baseball cap on, (small world we live in). I have lived next door to Paul Agustine (served aboard around 1970) for 16 years not knowing we had this in common. He told me about this great web page.

My tour on the "The Jolly Charlie" may have been the greatest adventure in my young life. "Join the Navy and see the world", Gitmo, San Juan. Virgin Islands, Med, Northern Europe and Charleston, Panama, Florida, New York and Newport. While in the Med. I was able to get a short leave and visit my Grandmother who lived about 70 miles north of Rome. I was taken there by a cousin whom I had never met before by train and bus, it was the one and only time I saw my Father's mother.

As I have scrolled through this great list of names it brought back many great memories plus some sadness to see that some of us have passed on.

I remember very well that man overboard call and trying to refuel in the North Atlantic in very heavy seas.

My best to all, drop a line when you have a chance and May God Bless America.

Remember the first sea trial in 1980 and we had to come back pierside...a shipyard worker left a rag in the steering housing on the bridge. And the tragic desert duck pick up at nite for a fallen ICman.

Comments: I remember the men overboard in the Med because a firehose broke loose on the forecastle in heavy seas and they sent an officer and 3 or 4 men to gather it up while we were steaming at 30 knots. The intention was not to slow down so that we could make a previously scheduled rendevous with another ship. Well we ended up fishing these guys out of the water but I thought the officer was LT.Muckow. (09/17/10 Correction) The officer involved in the man overboard was Lt. Carpenter, not Lt. Meukow.
I wonder if Stephen Snowman remembers the tuna fish caper when a case of tuna fish mysteriously disappeared from a breakout he was making and ended up underneath the deck plates in the IC room.
I remember Chief Healey. There was a great guy. He was involved with the 'Jimmy Fund' when we were in Boston and I think he retired to R.I. There was also an IC3 Richard Blair from Saulte Ste. Marie.
Then there was the Cuban Missile Crisis and the North Atlantic Cruise and the Med Cruise and the Bi-Weekly trips to either Puerto Rico or to Mayport, Florida for plane guard duty for any number of carriers. We spent a lot of time at sea those first 4 years.

The places the ship visited, Lisbon, Scotland, London, San Juan, St Croix, New York, Recife Brazil, the Roof Top Lounge in Massawa Ethiopia to name a few, the experiences I had and the friends I made during my time aboard the Adams was well worth it.

But the experience of collectively working and living on the Charlie Deuce, along with the true camaraderie within our engineering division, created memories which have lasted a lifetime. I hope to see her in port as a museum some day. I'll certainly make the trip south to Jacksonville. An opportunity to ignite those old memories, and salute all those I had served with one final time, would be wonderful and humbling.

Comments: Best ship, best crew of my career. From hot, dark and quiet of the coast of Oman to 33 1/2 knots at full power in the Persian Gulf, the Adams was a steamer. Nice to see some names of real "Hole Snipes", Mr. Nee and Mr. Strode. I get to see the Adams as I travel through Philidelphia, I hope to be able to visit her in Michigan.

Comments: Sometimes I look back on my time in the USN and I ask myself the question: "What the hell was I thinking?!" I often think about my time on the Duece, especially the grat times playing guitar w/Johnny S. on the fantail and writing politcally incorrect songs about politically incorrect subjects.

I have seen the Charley Duece on occasion(or what I think is her) in the yard at Philly on my way to a Flyers game. And I even went as far as to ask someone what it would take to get in and walk her deck one more time. No way! I guess I'll have to wait til the museum opens!

A couple of memories that stick out (besides the PDL-whatever happened to it???) was the time we were in Spain and we were nearly rammed by the Barney as she was pulling into port, and how several of us were "mass-pick-pocketed" by some locals. We drowned our sorrows that night!

Anyone who remembers the night in Cuba when the band played at the Chief's club, please tell me what happened...I just don't remember.

Hope some of the crew I served with reads this and can get in touch. I'd love to hear from you. Take care!

Comments: It was great to find this site after wondering for many years about some of the great guys I served with. I reported aboard not long before the "Duece" left for the Red Sea Cruise. It was during this time that I was initiated into the Royal Order of Shellbacks after being a lowly pollywog. I won't get too long-winded here but I too served with a great group of sailors in the Sonar Shack. I remember Ross McMinn, Mobil, Doug Hearley, Stan Beers, Chief Markham, Ron Harrington, Jonesy, John Loughton, Chief Bright and so many others. I especially remember the yards in Philadelphia because this is where I met my future bride. She was serving as a Navy Nurse at the Naval Hospital, yes, an officer no less. We have been married for 27 years and have three children. I also have great memories of the many trips that Dennis "Doc" Glaude and I took to his home in Manchester, New Hamphire while we were in Philly. I am still in touch with HM2 Glaude, he served as my "Best Man" when I got married. I served as his "Best Man" when he got married to a young lady from Gainesville whom he met on one of our many trips to the lake where my parents lived. I am still in touch with Chief Mike Bright, who reported aboard while we were in dry-dock at Philly in 1975. He subsequently advanced to Chief Warrant Officer, retired and still lives in the Jacksonville, FL. area. I would like to hear from any of you that served aboard the Charlie Duece during my time aboard. Boy I said that I wasn't going to get too long winded but whatever. Hey Mobil, do you remember the night Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's HR record. We were sitting in front of the tube at your place in Mayport. Those were great days, as someone said in their synopsis, "we reported on board as boys and left as men." I have done many things since I left the Navy, taught high school math, coached high school football and baseball, and had a successful career in the Insurance Businss, but none compares to the great times aboard the Deuce. I almost forgot, the last I heard and saw of the ship was in Philadelphia again. My wife and youngest son were going through on their way to visit her parents in New Jersey. They went onto the base and got pictures of her tied up to the pier. I also hear they are trying to get her moved to Tampa as a Museum, that would be great.

I still have a picture of myself Danaghy IC2 and someone else that I haven't been able to identify in the cruise book. We were at a nightclub in Lisbon,Portugal. I still remember Danaghy sketching a picture of me. Still have that also. He used to tell me that I was the first Mex/American he ever saw in person. Matter of fact I was the first Mex/American to serve on the Jolly-Charlie. Over the years I have connected with A Lillimagi MM1. He resides in Concord,Ca. Comments: I was the first plankowner to arrive at Bath. The Adams was a hull and superstructure when I first saw her, no paint and not much interior finished. Since there wasn't much for me to do and I didn't know how anyway, I spent most of my time working with the Preble DLG 15 (I think). As I had some spare time I went to the Bowdoin College Library in Brunswick and looked up info on Charles F. Adams. That's where I got a copy of his family crest which became the emblem shown at the top of the of Web Page.

It was a real thrill to watch a ship get built and come to life and Bath Ironworks was the best possible place to experience it because of all the history. It was also fun to hang out in the bar of the hotel some of us stayed in and listen to sea stories. (I just came back from a trip to Bath which is what got me started looking up the Adams on the web.) Last time I saw the ship while in commission was when I was on a reserve two weeks in Rosy Roads, the next time I saw her was driving into Philadelphia past the Navy Yard and being shocked by seeing that high bow with the number 2 on it. I can't be that old and neither can the Adams !!

I really hope we can save her and would like to help.

Comments: Oh the memories. Jimmy Buffet and Molly Hatchet, and Lynard Skynard never had anything on us. We left a dent in the local watering holes everywhere we went, from the Med, the Carib and even that waste of 100 days in the Arabian Sea waiting for the Iranian hostages to catch a plane back to the U.S.of A. To all my shipmates, we have memories that we will never forget, most we can't expound upon in this public forum, but we all know the meaning of the brotherhood of the Charlie Duce. Comments: I did the early assignment to CFA from boot camp for 6 months then on to Sonar A school in Key West and back to the CFA for the rest of my tour. The times in the Med, Carib and even Gitmo were good. Charleston was OK but enjoyed Mayport/Jacksonville more. I remember the night the boiler blew and was forever changed by it. After my early discharge to attend school at Metro State in Colorado on the GI bill I graduated with a BSEET. Next several years working in Technical Services for CDC, Network Systems Corp. and STK. Given early retirement opportunity by STK a couple of years ago. Now learning to golf, fish and volunteer at the local American Legion. Hope to hear from 'poo bear' to hear about his dad.

Comments: I met the Adams in Rota, Spain. I had a bad moment while on watch above thee bridge. Bad storm hit the ship, and it knocked me off my feet. That was a very large wave. The Captain brought all the watches in after that. A ship crashed in our ship in Naples. We had to stay a little longer to repair the damage. The Adams had to go to the ship yards in Charleston, S.C.I retired in 1995, with 26 years in the Reserves. Look forward to seeing the Adams again. By the way, anyone know Charles Gilchrest. He was a GM.

Comments: One of my main memmories of the CFA was how well it rode at sea. Comming from a Somner Class (DD762) It was like a dream come true. The galley was great. Plenty of room. I changed rate in 1966 to AX3 and continued my career in the Navy and retired in 1984 with 23 years. Does the CFA ever have any reunions? Who do I contact. Good luck all you shipmates.

Comments: So many memories... The missle shoot on the NATO cruise when our TARTAR got out of telemetry and blew up almost directly overhead! Traveling from Bermuda to Ft. Lauderdale going abeam of the Gulf Stream and induring 30-45 degree rolls. Footprints 3 feet up on either side of the passageway after we made port. Nicknames.. Possum, Scooter, Hitch, CT, Frog. Jimmy Baker and Gaylon 'Scooter' Scoates almost missing ship's movement in San Juan and having to leap from the pier onto a fender. Football on the pier in Naples. Nova Scotia. Sea snakes in the Red Sea. Snorkeling in GITMO and Curacao. Shore Patrol duty in Recife. Riding bikes in Lisbon. New York City and going to the Bachelor's Three Club. The Carousel Club in San Juan. A card game called 'Rat F***'. Inlaid coffee tables from Karachi. Crossing the Equator(I have my Shellback 'diploma' hung proudly on my wall). I'd like to hear from fellow crewmen from that time.

Can't forget the Cuban Blockade, we had gone down to Gitmo to test fire our Tarter missles. We had civilian engineers and academy cadets on board. When we got there we went to General Quarters, only this time we heard "this is not a drill". Afterwards we headed to Colon, Panama to meet troop ships coming thru the canal. We later enjoyed a ships picnic on the beaches of Vieques. I'll never regret joining the Navy and will always be grateful for the people I served alongside of and the ships I served upon.

Norway was an eye opener. The search for the Scorpian as a mess cook was a mess in the greens, I re-washed. Storming the castle in Naples was cool. The canal and the bay that followed is Germany. Had to volunteer for the swift boats to get off the ship. Ended up in Virginia, shore duty, must have been a New Yorker in Bu-Pers. If there is a reunion I will try to be there. I was the greatest YNSN helmsman in the Navy, because I was the only YNSN helmsman in the Navy. We went into the Phili Yards for our overhaul and dropped a five gallon can of tile glue on my hand, busted it pretty bad, from medhold, I was transferred to the USS Suribachi, the second to the worst ship in the Navy, and guess, I became the master helmsman on that ship too, but it was easier.

Many good memories. I Just can't believe all the time that has passed since the good old days on the Jolly Charley! Keep in touch.

Comments: It was a proud day in 1960, on a cold day in Boston, MA, when we raised the colors as a fully commissioned ship, and first of her class in the U.S. Navy. When we loaded the TARTAR TSAMS and aimed then over the audience, a cheer went up - pretty impressive. The Shakedown cruise to Northern Europe, showing the French, Germans, Swedes, and Danes what a great and proud ship we were, was the highlight of my tour.

Comments: I myself received orders to the Duce after leaving Signalmen Class A school in Orlando December 75. She was supposed to be in Mayport when I arrived there after two weeks leave in Hillside, N.J.. The Duce was nowhere to be found in Mayport nor did anyone know where she was. After three weeks in a holding Barracks, I was flown to Philly, Pa where she had been for more than a year. She was ready to leave when I boarded.

My first Sea Detail was a six hour ride down the Delaware River. It was January and 21 degrees without the wind-chill factor. Most of the OC dept stood on the signalbridge and we were very happy to be headed to Florida.

The Duce had been refitted with the latest in laser guidance fire control systems, electronic warfare toys and other mysterious stuff that I still can't pronounce correctly.

Subsequently, during the next year (1976), the ship and crew underwent several Sea Trials in the Caribbean and a 6 week stint in Cuba where she earned the Battle E ribbon. In the early spring of 1977 we were off for our first Med cruise with the new and improved Charlie duce. By the way, the war in Israel was still raging when we arrived in Haifa.

1978 yielded yet more Caribbean cruises, another battle E and another Med cruise. Finally, for me at least, in January of 79, we took the cruise back up the Delaware river for another refitting.

I was discharged in mid summer 1979 while she was in dry dock mostly gutted. That was the last I saw of the Charlie Duce, My home for almost for years.

Regards
Miles Holliday (ex SM3)

Comments: The two most fun days of my life were spent on board the Adams as we crossed the Equator in 73. As a polywog, I raised hell and along with Ross McMinn and Judd Bowness, among others, received special attention in Shellback Land. I was one of the few to plead not guilty before the Royal Baliff, and Ross and I were adjacent to each other in, as Chief Dotson put it, TO THE STOCKADE. I was one of the few who the Captain got down on his hands and knees to question me about mutiny and conspiracy as King Neptune (Markham) pinned my head to the deck with his trident. I now live in Florida and primarily do DJ for parties, weddings and special events (no not a ***** bars). As Ross says in his paragraph, I have maintained contact with Ross, Jud Bowness, I have seen John Louthan, as well as having talked to Stan Beers, Patrick Moran and Popcorn Walker. I would love to hear from anyone I partied with. I would love to find Tom Anderson, Dough Hearley and Brad Kelly, to name a few. For officers, I remember how cool John Parr and Tree were. I ran into T. J. Moore a few years back, he was Commodore of a destroyer squadron in Norfolk. Glad Ross turned me on to this page. I am going to contact Popcorn and make sure he gets on it. Looking forward to hearing from Trez and Dave Schmale. Dave used to ride with me to Evansville In. and after I kidded about naming my daughter Mobil, Dave was the first one to call me Mobil. Needless to say it stuck. My wife calls me Mobil and during a visit, my mom even slipped up and called me Mobil.

Comments: I look back and think how good I had it and didn't know it. Most of us went aboard as children and left as men. When I see the passion my own son has for life and the way he stands by his peers - I see us - shipmates, all learning about life, and standing by each other on liberty and on those long watches out there. I hope that all of our kids experience the genuine trust, love, and compassion we found out on those deployments.

Remember the Atlantic crossing in 78? How about the time we spent in Rosie Roads in 76? And there was the time the forward pumproom and diesel were flooded and we went to G.Q. at 0100 and pumped water all night.

I remeber how she steered and how she always wanted a little right rudder. If I ever had to go back to sea I would want to sail the Duece. Lived in Philly last year, went down to the yards and was overcome with how sad she looked all alone. Hope when I go I ride the seas with her, forever. I am not ready for email yet, I'll have to ask my kids to get me an address or show me how.

Comments: Stumbling across this page has brought back some memories and put me in contact with a 'lost' friend. I found my cruise book from our NATO-Mediterranean Cruises 64 - 65, and intend to look up some of the old faces now listed on this web site. I did get in touch with Bill Kohler who served on the CFA the same time as I did. My wife and I just got back from Hawaii where we visited Bill and his wife for a week. It was a fun time and we had some great laughs over our time together 45 years ago. Wow! After my time in the Navy, I went back to school to get my BS in mathematics and worked on a masters. I taught school for 10 years and then worked for the Oil and Gas Commission for 25 years. I am married, and have 3 sons, each of which has graduated from college and are now on their own. I have built a couple of homes in my spare time and spent many years following my sons baseball and football teams around the country. I do hope to contact more of the old crew and find out what has happened to each of you. Take care. Rich

Jerry was born Oct. 6, 1940 in Knapp, WI, on the farm owned by his parents, Frank and Lucille (Platson) Johnson. He graduated from Glenwood City High School in 1958, and served his country joining the US Navy. He was assigned to the Pre Com detail for the USS Charles F. Adams DDG-2 in Bath Maine. He served on the DDG2 as SN / GM3 / GM2 and MT2 until 7/2/62. Jerry married Eileen Beck in 1966 but the marriage later dissolved, however they were blessed with a son, Rodney. He worked as factory worker several years, before opening Jer-Leens Bar in Baldwin, WI which later became Jerry’s Bar. He operated in Baldwin for 33 years then relocated his bar to Wilson. Also for 16 years he farmed and raised buffalo. Jerry was again married to Peggy Smith on Sept. 30, 2000.

Jerry was a loving husband and father, who possessed a kind and gentle heart. He was a huge sports fan and enjoyed cheering for the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins. Jerry was always able to take a ribbing when his teams did not win, but relished his ability to give it right back. He played softball in Baldwin and surrounding areas for more than 40 years, starting with slow-pitch in the 1950’s and hung up the cleats after fast-pitch in early 2000’s. Jerry was comfortable on a golf coarse, and often played cards four or five days a week, and was one of the first in the area to follow and play fantasy football in the 1970’s!

Jerry is survived by his wife, Peggy; son, Rodney; step-daughters, Melissa (Chuck) Roatch, and Barbara (Joel) Olson; grandchildren, Laura Hoyt, Lindsey, Luke and Logan Roatch, Luke and Samantha Olson; great-granddaughters, Madalyn, Kendalyn, and Sophie; siblings, Janice (Alan) Fleming, Phillip “Buzz” Johnson; nephews, Mikell (Marilee) Fleming, and Marty (Vi) Fleming; other extended relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Karen Johnson; and great nephew, Joshua Fleming.

A gathering of family and friends will be held 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2017 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton St., Baldwin. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Wilson Lutheran Cemetery in Wilson.

Comments: What a ship!!! An experience only those who rode her can really tell for sure. I remember "GQ" Lane and John Narciso as CO's and of course PT Dueterman as XO. Whoa!

Mayport memories include life membership at Top of the Tides, 4 deployemnt in 3 years, banzai liberty briefs on the gut, the hydraulic rain forest, UnReps good and bad day and night, chem lites, How sharp we always looked, mail bouys and buckets of steam, Rosner burying a case of brew on the beach at rosie roads - and finding it the next time through!

32 knots and no smoke chasing Forrestal to Norway GIUK gap, Hurricance crossing with Independence - Lt Keville and I tied down to the bridge hand holds trying to stand JOOD and the water spraying in through the bridge windows as we took another greenie, Fuel oil in j-o country "Boys town topped off sir!", how good the girls looked in all those ports and how they looked in the photos we looked at back home. cattle cars in Rota, crashing the SOVMEDFLT change of command at Kithra anchorage, playing a german destroyer in some med exercise, towing targets for A-7s to shoot at, the forever MODLOC in the eastern med, we could find some bad weather that ususally ripped the lifelines right off the main deck, Hot gun mount 51, thunderstorms in Instanbul harbor,

Shipyard memories - shop 26, upgrading radio central thanks to the USS Interpid in the inactive basin, man overboard of Cape Hatteras in January,

Super people doing incredible things BMs, MMs, RMs and SMs, and their Tycom "E"s. What professional folks. Names like RMC Yeoman, RM1 Minton (how old was Bill anyway?), RM1/RMC Schelegel, RM2 Wood, the Grape Ape and them all, all the RM crew and SM crew Wriggelsworth, Sobolok, Holiday,et al

What am I doing now married 2 kids and still doing inactive reserve duty as an O-6. Ah-ha Lifer! Regards to all and please drop me an email anytime

Comments: Served on three Med cruises and the North Atlantic. Was in charge of supply room for both fire rooms and top watch. Was on ship when we won gunnery excersise and was the first Navy ship to go into a small Norway port and when leaving we run aground on a sunkin ship and bent one of our screws. The ship limped into port in Spain and in process of having the screw replaced by a tender on the starbord side and the Tatnel on the left side was ramed by a Greek oiler hitting the Tatnel. Had many great memories and some not so good but all and all wouldn't have missed it. Will look forward to going to Mi. and seeing the ship soon.

Comments: What a great find! Lots of old shipmates and fond memories. I came to the Adams right out of NROTC. Joined in Charleston just in time to move to Mayport in July, 1969. I was the R Divison officer, went to Damage Control School at Philadelphia and then came back and rejoined the ship in Barcelona at the start of the 1970 Med Cruise. As soon as I returned I was made the MPA. Good introduction to Navy Logic!

Great to see a lot of familiar names. The whole experience was an eye-opener. Some vignettes of those good times: - the unwelcome collision to our nest in Naples, Captain Gatje's mother getting picked up by the Greek police in Leros, festival in Brindisi, Tony Finefield's car wreck in Civitavecchia, the political prison on Leros, "Boys Town," being the school ship for Destroyer School in Newport. The last was particularly memorable because I was ever the reluctant engineering officer. My boss, LT Bill Lawrence, the Chief Engineer got back at me for my reluctance to apply to DES School by making me participate in the Prospective Engineering Officer Course while we were there. I wound up running all over my own engineering spaces when we ran BCCE/BDCE drills! Many thanks for all the guys in M Division for their tolerance and assistance. BTCS Goldie was a lifesaver.

CO's were CDR Jones, then Carl Gatje. LCDR Beasley was memorable as XO. Jack Pugh, ASW, Mike Tansey, WEPS, Dick Klima, Ass't Supply Officer, Pat Kuziak, MPA, George Vincent, DCA, Ben Tipton, 1st LT . . . . lots more, on this sight.

Adams destroyers are beautiful ships and the Charlie Duece was a "Class Act" in all ways.

Comments: The experiences I had and the friends I made while serving aboard the Charlie Adams have not faded, even though many years have silently slipped by. They have been refreshed numerous times through the years, as they found their way, as anecdotal experiences, into friendly exchanges of life’s adventures. What an outstanding opportunity it was, in the learning curve of life, to travel on that unique and special branch of the pathway of life.

Comments: I enjoyed my years on the C.F. Adams. I met a lot of guys that I became very good friends with. I especially miss seeing Rich Connell FTM3, Gary (Hitch) Hitchcock FTM3, Gaylan (Scooter) Scootes FTM3, Herchell Ananias Jones FTM1, Jose Back FTM1 and many more, but I cannot recall names. Special memories include crossing the Atlantic late in 1969 and enduring one of the worst sea storms in history, we actually took 45 degree rolls. Then there was the collision with a Greek freighter while moored between our Tinder and our sister ship the USS Tattennel DDG (not sure of the spelling or her number). The truth of this story was that no one saw the Freighter, after the bow of one of the ships (that was moored closer to the pier than us) and bending its bow at almost a right angle causing it to put a large hole the bow of the Tattennel and then sandwiching us between the Tattennel and the Tinder the story was that we were squashed so badly that we actually got longer. The ship was mass confusion no one seemed to know what to do. Power cables had been pulled apart and were throwing sparks everywhere. In my bare feet I ran to the Quarter Deck insisted that Quarter Deck Watch Call General Quarters. I then ran across the Asroc deck jumping over slapping electrical cables that had been pulled apart, to my General Quaters Station, which was in Combat. I then started requesting that all Damage Control stations start reporting in to me until appropriately relieved by the Combat Office. Later it was reported (I believe) by the Italian Coast Guard that we were struck by a Greek freighter and they (if you can believe this) did not know that they hit anything. This is the true story.

Comments: My best friend and a former shipmate and crewmember of mine has just passed away. The world will not be the same without Robert Lewis Lowe Jr. more commonly known to his old buddies as Bob Lowe. He was my best friend. I’ve known him since 1978 when I first came aboard the Adams. I was a skinny angry kid that took life way to serious. Bob was my surrogate older brother who taught me how to lighten up and laugh a little bit. He has been my friend ever since. He had a big heart. He loved Harleys. He leaves behind a wonderful wife, a daughter and stepson he was very proud of. He helped shape my life. I will miss him. He used to call me homer and I never got mad, if another man ever used that term, I’d plant him where he stood. Ride on Loweboy. I would love to hear from anyone who served on the Adams or knew Bob.

Comments: I had many memorable times. Valuable life lessons were learned. I only remember the many good times. In hindsight, I have always wondered why I didn't stay in the service. I lost contact with all of my good friends within a year after leaving the ship. Tim Ryan, Paul Capps, and Ralph Byrd are the only 3 that I can even remember seeing after I got out of the service. Tim was still in Florida. Paul was in South Carolina and I believe that Ralph was in Florida. The NATO Cruise was a blast. The Middle East Cruise was a lot of sea time with Christmas in Port Louis, Mauritius. I think that I could literally write a book about all of the fun times that we had... so I will stop before I get started! I will most definitely visit the Charles F. Adams if it finds a home in Jacksonville... I ended up at Clemson University a day after I got out of the service. I graduated with a BS in Math in 1977 and got a career job in Florida. I have lived there ever since. I became a PADI Scuba Instructor in 1988 and moved up the ranks and retired from PADI in 2007 as a Master Instructor. I taught evenings and weekends and literally was in the West Palm Beach area and the Keys almost every weekend for years... I had the privilege of teaching many people of all ages how to dive so that they could experience the wonderful world under water. Man, I wish I was certified when I was in the service... We were in some of the most beautiful areas of the world on our cruises... And with that I will stop...

Comments: I look back on my time on the Charlie Deuce with pride and fond memories. I wouldn't want to go through it again but I wouldn't trade my time aboard for anything.

We had fun and we had challenges. I still think of the clear skies in the dark of the night and bright stars shining over head. WOW what a feeling to be on the after superstructure on a warm, clear night in the middle of the Pacific or t Med. The care packages from home and sharing them with your buddies and shipmates. Sleeping three deep and nose-to-nose with you bunk mate above, below or beside you. (Thank the Lord for those little pieces of sheet metal full of holes.) Crossing the Pacific in a Hurricane, refueling in the frigid North Atlantic in winter, bringing supplies on-board on Sunday, our only day of rest at sea. The good times with my closest shipmates: Rick Sanders, BB King, Richard (Van) Van Houghton and all the guys in the GM Division. I often wonder what happened to that talented musician Mike Breen and that crooner "Moon" Mullins.

Who can forget the Condition Three watches at sea or the four-section duty in port? How about those watches in after steering (especially during the rough weather) or the long watches on the QuarterDeck? How about those midnight watches on the Weapons Roving Patrol?

I often think of FTMC Chief "Bo" Bovastro, my good buddies on the Missile Launcher (Willie, Dusty, and all), my good mates in Radar Tracking and Weapons Control and of all of those in Missile Plot who I worked with and supervised. For some reason some of you chose to confuse my faith and referred to me as "Father" when you knew darn good a well I was a Baptist and not a Catholic. grin

I'd love to hear from my shipmates who served aboard from 1976-1979.

Greg

Comments: Relieved Paul Ecker in Naples in summer of 1976. I served under CAPTs G.Q. Lane and John Narciso and with XOs Pete Deuterman and Walt Wasowski. Those were good years, among the most memorable of my life. We had a wonderful and cohesive crew, and outstanding middle management among the chiefs and senior petty officers. Charles F. Adams was a great ship on which to go to sea. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the comments made here especially by those who were my shipmates, former chiefs Fairweather and Bellais whom I remember fondly. I read Ron Brunson's and Jack Kelley's comments also and recalled spending many hours on the bridge with them.

Comments: Yea - - - I was there! The rough trip over to the Med. in '69. The trip was so rough that during my mess cook duties I had to have a second person with me in the foreward freezer. The cargo netting over the frozen food was a real joke when everything went weightless. A guy could have gotten burried up there and no one would have known. Spent my 21st birthday out at sea without a drop to drink. I remember being "Med." moored in Naples and missing my seat when I started to sit down for the movie. Damned freighter caused a lot of mass confusion. All I know is my station ended up being at the top of the starboard ladder on the ASROC deck with a loaded M1 keeping people from coming up. Oh there's plenty to remember - - like blowing a steam line in the aft fireroom (my station) on our way back into Charleston from a shakedown cruise. We were converting from "black oil" to JP5. I also remember someone (was it Schaffer????) that got slashed in San Juan because he didn't think Old Town was that bad of a place after dark. (If I got the wrong name please forgive me but that name sticks with me). I remember a long night in Athens that I don't remember anything of. If you find that confusing - - you should have been me, Ouzo is a wonderful drink. The NATO cruise was a real blast. Getting to the north Atlantic was a real treat for us smooth water sailors. Would still like to hear from Rodger, Larry, Dave or the rest of the "aft" gang and oh by the way Marty did you ever get those shoes bronzed that my dog marked as his territory while you were wearing them. All in all I guess the time abord the "duce" was one of life's better experiences and it does a body good just to remember.

Comments: Got on board while still in the Philly shipyard, just as we moved off the tender and onto the ship (well remember Blind Man's, and taking flights to Jacksonville to see my wife)

Some of the times on the "number two ship" (that's what my sons called it), were very entertaining - the smokers, barbecue's, talent shows, walking and biking all over the med. Other times were not as good - sweating the small stuff, seeing the world from the main deck port side, port/starboard liberty, pulling shore cable.

I made three med cruises as well as a gitmo, and the caribean multiple times.

For those who don't remember me, I ran the first on board TV station on the "Deuce" (both channels - DDG-2 and DDG-4). I do recall allowing some after hours viewing that ended up getting me in trouble with the chaplain when the "video" was broadcast through the whole ship.

I didn't see too many names listed here that I recognize (except for Steve Cannon's).

Comments: Plank Owner - I was a member of the pre-commioning crew in Bath, Me., and went on the first sea trial of Charles F. Adams, before they put the reduction gears. Did this ship ever go. I remember all the trips down to the Caribbean and the trip to Europe. Back in those days the F stood for Field day. Did we ever make this ship shine!!

I was in Bath Me., the Sunday after 9/11, and saw the commissoning of DDG 82. That brought back memories and that is why I found this web site. Thanks.

Comments: Ahhh the DUECE! It was the best job I had in the Navy bar none! The fishing expeditions and contests on the fantail (I still say I have the record for the biggest Bluefish). PNC Mike Hurt, fish are biting down here in Tampa, get in touch with me dammit. Drug Ops and Med Cruises, high seas and low times (death of my Mom). The ship took care of us (mostly). XO Rains, big time bass fisherman now, well done Sir! XO Hillary running around with a loaded Glock - good gawd what an accident waiting to happen. Pulling into La Spezia Italy with my new bride on the pier, what a sight that was (forever in my mind). It was amazing the power a YN1 had over Dept Heads on down when they needed administrative help. We sure did drink our share and then some. My Signalmen shipmates and Quartermaster allies, thanks for a good time. Jenkins, Buck (Mund) and the girly-men in the Personnel Office, nothing like making life harder. DK1 the most political butt kisser I ever met (even to this day - laughing). It was fun times in Mayport, I was lucky to stay stationed there (Jax area) for my last 12 years. Retired as a YNC and happily retired now in Tampa (Davis Islands). If any of my shipmates pass through the Tampa Bay area, let me know. Drinks are on me.

Comments: After a two year refit in Philly, her last, the Duece returned to Mayport in July 1984 a wreck. Nothing worked!! The following six weeks in GITMO was a living HELL. Returning to Mayport and a warm reception from an INSURV Board was even worse. From there, the Adams went from being the worst in Squadron in 1984, to being the best in 1986, 1987, and 1988. Three "Battle E's" in a row was a fitting tribute to the hard work and determination of a really outstanding crew. Special recognition is due the XO at the time, LCDR Jimmie Ray Jackson, the CHENG, LCDR Earl "The Pearl" Yerger, the OPS Boss, LCDR Greg Allen, and the finest steam plant "afficianado" in the Atlantic Fleet, CWO Jimmie Donaldson. It's a wonderful tribute to hear that, of all the Adams Class Destroyers in mothballs at the old Philly Navy Yard, the "Charlie Duece" was found to be the best for preservation. I always knew it was. 1984-1988 was the finest and most rewarding four years of my Navy career. ! I can't wait to step aboard once again after she retires to her final home in my great state of Florida.

One of them was Doug Belcher whose listed in this directory. I wish I had the time, room, and memory to recall of my memories. Remember when Steve got sunburned in Rosey Roads, PR...... or the time he shows to muster with a orange under shirt beneath his tropical whites, because he was still drunk from the night before.... or Dean Baker and Robert Dawkins, Crazy man Doug, would be working on the launcher...

Nothing but great memories on the Adams, met and worked with fantastic people. Wish the job market was better in Florida in 85', we would have never left. I'll never forget Naples, Italy where Terry Manganello and I had overnight and went to Rome by train to visit his uncle John who was a priest in a small church. We had a great time seeing all the sites. When we returned we both had the midnight watch, Terry in the boiler room and I was in the engine. It wasn't long into the watch when Terry ( what I remenber, was opening a valve to blow down the boiler) thats when the problems started and I never saw Terry again, but never forgot him.

Comments: I still have the Charlie (Deuce not Duce) CFA commissioning photo over my computer and love the memories it helps me recall. I was in the original group who reported to Newport R.I. where we lived in barracks until the CFA came down from Bath, ME. We had great times that summer. I remember ice cream eating contests between S.M.(Sam) Johnson and Pat (Hoss) Hoesel most nights. We dated nurses and WACS nearby. It was a great summer.

I remember sea trials and 24 hours running in reverse at high speed for engine testing, and then to the Caribbean for missile test firings off Rosie Roads where I spent my 21st birthday and firing shots at Vieques. The missiles failed most times and one went under the ship and shot up off the other side. I was one of the original ships band members (played accordion) for the CO William Robert Munroe Jr. (Deceased) and XO Lt.CDR. Jack Hilton. (I stay in touch with Jack via email) The band played at some really fancy parties and places in Northern Europe. In Aarhus, Denmark at the Aarhus Hallen the 50 piece orchestra left the stage and we took over and rocked the house with "When The Saints Came Marching In". They wouldn't let us stop. I was a driver for the Capt. and XO in port in Europe. I remember the people of Gothenburg, Sweden lining miles of piers with cars to see us off as we left port. We stopped in Rotterdam, Vollendam, Brest, France, Kiel, Germany, Portsmouth, England and Lisbon, Portugal. I've revisited many of these places over the years. I've seen the CFA in the Philly shipyard and it is very sad. I went aboard when it was in NYC sometime in the late 1980's and found one mate was still on board from our original crew. I have since become the Executive Secretary of a group we call the "ADAMS CLASS VETERANS ASSN. INC." and we are working to save the CFA from the scrapper and to find a city for it to become a museum ship. I always like to find out what became of our shipmates and began keeping an "ADAMS CREWLIST" some years ago. I have become the "Official Keeper of the Crewlist" and have over 2500 crew members' names on the list and about 700 with emails and detailed information. We use it for notification for reunions and other information. If you?re looking for a buddy let me know and I will see what I have on file.

I located our first CIC Officer, LTJG F. Massie Hughes, in Arkansas, and many other mates. I try to keep in touch with many via email. XO Capt. Jack Hilton went on to command several ships and lives near Richmond, VA. Several other officers also became CO's and Capt. of their own ships. Pat (Hoss) Hoesel (RD3) lives in Schaumburg, ILL. Jim Schmitz (RD3) is in Fond Du Lac, WI., Mike Dickhausen (ET2) lives nearby and Pat Batolotta (RD3) and Rick Baratuck (RD3) are in CA. John Bolcher (RD3) went to Sweden as he promised he would and has lived there about 30 years. Tony Rao (RD3) became a cop in Irvington, NJ and passed away years ago. Tony would go home to NJ and bring back the best cheesecakes his mother made for us. I remember helping make the CIC DRT cover with tiles and setting up and lining the original CIC plot boards. We had many pinochle games over each weekend while in port from Friday night till Monday morning. Sydney Wheat (RD2) and Al Schwenk (BT) are in upstate NY and worked for Kodak. Max Monaco (GMM) lived in NJ and passed away Nov 2005 of a brain tumor. Rich 'Pig' Pignatello (GMM) lives in VT.

I would like to hear from all crewmates from the ADAMS and keep in touch to make certain I have your latest information on file for contact about reunions. Ship reunions have been about every 2 years since Leroy Houghton (CS) now Deceased and Bill O'Neill started the ADAMS DDG-2 / TATTNAL (DDG-19) combined reunions about every 2 years. Bill O'Neill is now coordinating them. Check our ADAMS Class web page at http://www.adamsclassddgvets.org/ to join our group to save the ADAMS and to see DDG reunion information.

It is my hope that in the future we can formally establish a "Charles F. Adams DDG-2 Crew Member Association." Dave Myerly - Keeper of the Adams Crew List (DaveDDG2@aol.com)

Comments: I really loved being a member of OI division. I remeber seeing so many people come and go. I had a blast on the North Atlantic cruise. I tell people that I threw up for 6 months straight. Wouldn't trade that for the world. I miss all the skulls. Has any one heard from "TugRon 8" "Lunchbox Larry" "Mayor McCheese or Rob Bob Gooflay"

Submission Form

(Return to Index)

Please fill out the following form if you are a former crew member of the Charles F. Adams and you would like to get added to this list. You can also use this form to update your current information, if you choose.
NOTE: When you submit this form, you will be taken to a verification page, where you can check the info you have submitted. Just ignore the commercial garbage near the bottom - you DO NOT need to check any of the boxes except the (continue) button to verify your data.

When you finish verifying your data and click (continue), you will be taken to the main BozAir page. Just use your browser's "back" button to get back to the DDG-2 page. Sorry about this hassle, but it's part of the strings attached to having a "free" form.
